Let’s talk about pickup covers.
We supply and fit the best available guitar pickup covers.
We source the best possible covers from top USA metal and plating manufacturers and we fit them well, so that they don’t ring or squeal. The thickness and type of material used in covers matters. Our Raw Nickel covers have no plating on them; they really are a raw material and have the least impact on tone. Our Silver Nickel covers use a thin copper layer, onto which the outer silver layer is plated. Done right, this has a negligible impact on tone. We have purchased most covers on the market (tested and binned them) to ensure you receive only the best covers that have a minimal impact on your tone.
We don’t fit covers sent in to us by customers.
Reason one; pole spacing – 48mm, 49.2mm, 50mm, 52.4mm, 52.8mm, 53mm “F Spaced” are all terms used on websites where you may find humbucker covers for sale. Unfortunately the terms are not always interchangeable and we often see covers that are a different spec to that described by the supplier. So, chances are your covers won’t fit our pickups. It gets costly for customers to buy, then ship in parts to us especially if they aren’t the correct spec. We try to avoid the hassle by offering the best covers, fitted to your JJ’s Guitar Pickups during manufacture.
Reason two; quality - As detailed above, we use only high quality covers. If you send in some covers you found online, apart from not fitting, they may also be made of poor or thick materials, and may even be made of steel that sticks to magnets! This is not cool and ruins your tone!
We don’t fit our covers to pickups sent into us by customers.
For the same reasons listed above, mostly pole spacing. This applies especially to rewinds, obsolete MIJ pickups that often have uncommon pole spacing and even pickup dimensions. We can always try, and sometimes we have something in stock that will fit a rewind, but it’s rare. We will be happy to re-fit any original covers to your old pickups.
We don’t recommend fitting aftermarket covers to our pickups.
If you wish to go it on your own and attempt to fit aftermarket covers to our pickups, you could experience any of the pole spacing issues, or poor quality materials. Because we don’t know what you’re going to fit, or how it will affect the sound of our pickups, we don’t recommend doing this.
Attempts to fit covers to, or remove covers from our pickups will void warranty.
Weekly I see pickups in for rewind that have been damaged by folks trying to either fit or remove covers. Often the soldering is too difficult, the iron too small and the covers are then levered off with screwdrivers, or solder cut with razor blades, which in turn breaks the coil wire.
We don’t sell covers or any parts individually.
We keep enough stock for our pickup builds only, so we are unable to supply parts individually. We can recommend some great and trusted parts suppliers in Australia, so if you need their details, please get in touch. We can often dial in on the exact part you need and provide a link for you.
Strat covers can usually be changed, but you’ll need to check pole spacing (52.4mm on all of our Strat pickups) and also be aware that we custom make some of our bobbins and we use all of the available real-estate under Strat covers, so other covers may not fit, and you may damage the coil trying to fit them.
It’s not all bad. We want to look after our customers. If you own a set of our humbucking pickups, or a tele neck pickup and you want to change covers, send the pickups in and we can fit the best possible covers for you and we will only charge for the parts and shipping. If it’s a humbucker or Tele neck pickup, we know what fits and how to fit it. If it’s a Strat, just let us know what colour you’d like and we can send them out for parts & shipping cost.
